Dylan Bernstein in Pilsen

mysore & workshops

Dylan Bernstein is an experienced and respected teacher of Ashtanga yoga, pranayama and yoga philosophy.

We've met Dylan last year at Ashtanga yoga Regensburg, where he taught mysore lessons and some workshops. Since October 2023 we've been studying traditional yoga texts (Bhagavadgita and Patanjali's Yogasutras) with Dylan in his online program Further Mentorship.

Travelling arround Europe - between his workshops in Ashtanga yoga Regensburg in Germany and 2-weeks teaching of mysore in Shala Prague he make a short weekend stop in our small Shala in Pilsen, where he will teach morning mysore and 2 workshops. Such a great pleasure to invite Dylan in Pilsen!

Ashtanga Yoga: History, Practice & You!

  • Where did Yoga come from ?!
  • How did we get here to 2024 doing all these vinyasas?!
  • Where does our Ashtanga practice fit into the History of Yoga and why does it matter?!
  • How does Ashtanga work?! --> Practice is the answer!

Practice is key and in this unique workshop, Dylan will unlock tips, tools, techniques - that will have your practice aligned with the highest aims of yoga. We will work on breath, bandha, vinyasa, posture and drishti. Everyone is welcomed, especially people who feel unfit or injured. This will be a fun exploration, without dogma... that will help us all see our practice in a new light of our place in History! This workshop will be half discussion and half practices of asana and meditation.

Sunday 11:00-13:30

Looking Down theRoad: Setting up Backbends, Hand-Balances and Transitions

Ashtanga works brilliantly as a closed system. That is, the postures at the very beginning can inform the postures further down the journey. In that case, learning basics from someone who has traveled far into the system can be a blessing. Dylan will take the time to detail approaches to Chaturanga that will build Arm Balance proficiency. We'll look at the abdomen and spine in Fundamental Asana and see reflections into Backbends. As we revise basics, we will also play with advancing postures. It will be fun! Students are encouraged to bring a 'struggle pose' so that we may workshop it together. Everyone is welcomed, especially people who feel unfit or injured.

Is it for you?

The practitioners of all levels are welcome. It doesn't matter, how long have you been practicing or how advancend you are. Are you familiar at least with Sun Salutations and some basic asanas from Primary Series and you know the mysore style practice (even if only for a short time) - it is for you.

Dylan Bernstein

Dylan is delighted to reach out to yoga practitioners across the globe. He has helped to build bustling, supportive and ongoing Mysore communities in Hong Kong, Istanbul and Bali. In addition to running stable Ashtanga programs, he has taught workshops and high-level immersions in dozens of locations worldwide.

Dylan had the good fortune to be introduced to yoga and zazen meditation in 1988, at the ripe age of 14. Since then, he has called upon the practices to engage the body, still the mind and seek more subtle expressions of self. Though the soil and conditions around him are often shifting, the practices keep him grounded internally, allowing for stability even when in the midst of change.

A lifelong interest in Asian philosophy, culture and poetics brought him to reside throughout Asia, where he has maintained his home base since 2001. He has learned immensely both by travelling widely and by living in Vietnam, India, Bali and Hong Kong. In addition to time spent in Mysore with Shri K Pattabhi Jois, Saraswati and Sharath Jois, Dylan has been blessed to connect with many other dear senior teachers. Time spent working and residing in the monasteries of Venerable Thích Huyền Diệu has also proven immensely insightful.

Dylan holds a Master's Degree in Buddhist Studies, has been authorised to teach Ashtanga by the Shri K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute and even has the highest certification available from Yoga Alliance stashed away in a drawer somewhere.

A student of teaching techniques, Dylan has a background in pedagogy and cognitive development. His classes are designed to put students into direct contact with their own true internal teachers. Yoga has never been limited to āsana for Dylan and yet, he values the critical role that the physical practice can play in bringing light to one's whole being.

Essentially, Dylan remains a pluralist, believing in many kinds of truth and many manners of realisation. Though entertainment is not his focus in teaching, there is always room for laughter in his classroom. Ashtanga Vinyasa coupled with pranayama and other sitting practices continue to be the foundations of his understanding and teachings.
